Whether managing the complex, gaslit mechanics of a steampunk universe or tracking the ancient lore of an epic landscape, a detailed history of its primary relics is essential. Here is a look behind the curtain at the design and history of the magical artifacts that drive the conflicts in my realms.

Whether managing the complex, gaslit mechanics of a steampunk universe or tracking the ancient lore of an epic landscape, a detailed history of its primary relics is essential. Here is a look behind the curtain at the design and history of the magical artifacts that drive the conflicts in my realms.
1. The Clockwork Scarab (The Brassbridge Universe)
In a world where industry and the arcane collide, artifacts are often a marriage of precision engineering and captured magic.
The History: Commissioned during the height of the early industrial revolution by a secretive cabal of engineers, the Clockwork Scarab was originally designed as a diagnostic tool for high-pressure steam engines. It wasn’t until a drop of volatile, refined aether accidentally breached the central brass casing that its true nature was unlocked.
The Magic: The Scarab houses a hard-coded analytical enchantment. When placed against any mechanical device, it can "read" the physical history of the machine, projecting a spectral blueprint of its weaknesses, its past failures, and any intentional tampering.
The Cost: Magic always demands a balance. The Scarab runs on the kinetic energy of its user; operating it for more than a few minutes leaves the handler physically exhausted, as if they had spent a full day working the docks.
2. The Obsidian Looking-Glass (The Wormwood House Series)
For an ensemble of characters navigating the subtle social codes and dark shadows of an Edwardian-era paranormal setting, an artifact must be elegant but deeply unsettling.
The History: Passed down through generations of the coven residing at Wormwood House, this handheld mirror features a frame carved from polished obsidian rather than reflective silver. It was allegedly retrieved from a shipwreck off the rocky coast of Dorset, buried deep within a chest of waterlogged occult ledgers.
The Magic: Unlike a standard mirror, the Looking-Glass does not reflect the physical world. Instead, it reveals the spiritual resonance of whoever looks into it. In an era dominated by strict etiquette and hidden motives, it allows a witch to see a person’s true intentions, emotional state, or any active curses clinging to their aura.
The Cost: The mirror operates on a strict rule of absolute honesty. Looking into it forces the user to see their own deepest, most repressed vulnerabilities. To use it to look at others, one must first survive the uncomfortable truth of looking at oneself.
3. The Compass of Xannu (The Southern Lands Epic)
When dealing with expansive landscapes and ancient prophecies, artifacts scale up in both power and historical gravity.
The History: Forged centuries ago during the first age of the Southern Lands, this heavy, scripted brass compass is directly tied to the ancient lore of the realm. It does not point toward the magnetic north; its needle was tempered using meteoric iron and quenched in the waters of a long-forgotten sacred spring.
The Magic: The Compass is a literal guide for destiny. It is designed to track spiritual and magical convergence points across the continent. If a character is trying to locate an ancient font of power—or verify if a path aligns with the long-term threads of the Prophecy of Xannu—the needle will lock onto the correct trajectory.
The Cost: The device is entirely indifferent to human safety. It points to the destination dictated by the prophecy, completely ignoring whether that path leads through an active war zone, an impassable mountain range, or a nest of supernatural apex predators. It demands absolute, blind faith from the traveler.
The Blueprint for Managing Relics
From a tracking perspective, managing multiple magical objects across a multi-character storyline requires strict consistency. I handle this by keeping a dedicated "Hardware Ledger" inside my Series Bible. Every object is cataloged with three specific parameters:
The Trigger: What action is required to activate the object? (e.g., a drop of blood, a specific word, a mechanical winding).
The Limit: What are the boundaries of its power? Hard limitations create far better narrative tension than all-powerful items.
The Baseline: How does the world react to its presence? (e.g., does it cause local compasses to spin, or make nearby fires burn blue?).
By treating artifacts as rule-bound systems rather than convenient magic tricks, the stakes remain high for the characters, and the world feels authentic to the reader from Chapter One to the final page.
