The Dogs of JC Dorset: Meet the Real-Life Companions Who Sit by My Desk

When you take a "Technician's Approach" to writing—spending hours meticulously calculating word-count densities, organizing world-building tech trees, or debugging a broken scene—it can be easy to get entirely lost inside your own head. Left to my own devices, I’d probably stare at my digital workspace until my brain completely locked up. Thankfully, the universe has given me a built-in "system reboot" mechanism: the tapping of four paws on the studio floor. Behind every 40,000-word episode and every promotional blog post is a dedicated, real-life companion curled up right next to my desk. Today, I’m stepping away from the gaslit streets of my fictional realms to introduce the true supervisor of the workshop

Today, I’m stepping away from the gaslit streets of my fictional realms to introduce the true supervisor of the workshop.

Introducing Lucy: The Head of Studio Morale

If you’ve spent any time looking closely at the imagery and videos I share online, you might have caught a glimpse of a beautiful, black and white Cocker Spaniel. That’s Lucy.

[ THE DESK SIDE COMPANION PROFILE ]
+-------------------------------------------------+
NAME: Lucy
BREED: Cocker Spaniel (Black & White)
ROLE: Head of Studio Morale & Break Enforcer

CHIEF DUTIES:
- Sleeping through complex plotting sessions
- Nudging my elbow during crucial draft edits
- Demanding walks when the system halts
+-------------------------------------------------+

Lucy is a masterclass in living in the present. While I am busy agonizing over whether an Edwardian social etiquette detail is period-accurate or tracking lines from ancient prophecies, Lucy operates on a much simpler, more honest code: Is it time for a walk, is it time for dinner, or can I find a patch of sunlight on the rug?

Having a Cocker Spaniel by your side is an excellent antidote to writer’s block. When a scene crashes and I find myself trapped in an endless loop of over-description, looking down at those long, floppy ears and that utterly unimpressed face instantly grounds me. Dogs don’t care about structural integrity or narrative tension; they care that you are there, in the room, right now.

Lessons in Writing from the Canine Perspective

Believe it or not, living with dogs teaches you a lot about character development and pacing:

 • The Power of Non-Verbal Clues: Dogs communicate an entire universe of emotion without saying a single word. A twitch of the tail, a low sigh, or a sharp tilt of the head tells you everything you need to know. It’s a constant reminder for me to use body language in my prose instead of relying purely on dialogue.

 • The Unconditional Anchor: In my stories, I often write about complex ensembles—like families of witches or tight-knit scouting patrols. The core of those groups is always absolute loyalty. Watching the unwavering devotion of a spaniel gives me the perfect real-world template for building those deep, emotional bonds between characters on the page.

The True Architecture of a Writing Day

Ultimately, a creative life isn't just made of software, books of tables, and plotting blueprints. It’s made of the environment you build around yourself.

My writing studio is a space of contrasts: the high-tech efficiency of digital creative tools on the screen, surrounded by the cozy, comforting realities of home. And right at the center of it all, snoring softly through the birth of new universes, is Lucy. She might not understand the intricacies of a steampunk plot or the stakes of an epic romance, but the workshop wouldn't be complete without her.

Do you have a furry assistant who sits by your desk while you work, study, or create? How do your pets help you step away from the screen and reset your brain when you hit a wall? Let’s share some companion appreciation in the comments!
